Tossa de Mar
Tossa de Mar is a Spanish holiday resort located in Catalonia on the Costa Brava, about 103 kilometres north of Barcelona and 100 kilometres south of the French border. It is accessible through Girona airport, some distance north. Along with the Spanish language here is spoken the Catalonian Language, which is the second official and is similar to the bordering Valencian language in the Valencia region.
It is said that Tossa de Mar was already inhabited in the Neolithic period about 5000 BC. From 1000 BC was occupied by the Iberians. The most well known settlement is villa romana dels Ametllers. With the spread of the Roman Empire it was colonized about the year 100.
The long history of Tossa de Mar left the rich cultural heritage of different epochs and cultures. Among the historical buildings and monuments are the walled enceinte’s narrow alleyways, Tossa’s Lighthouse with the magnificent views of the coast. Outside the walls there is the traditional fishermen’s quarter, known as Sa Roqueta. Beyond Sa Roqueta is located the town’s centre commercial area.
In Tossa de Mar you can enjoy the typical cuisine of the Mediterranean from Italy to Spain dishes. Here is combined the typical Mediterranean dishes cooked by fishermen on boards of their fishing boats and the modern creative gastronomy. In Tossa de Mar there are also perfect beaches. There are three main beaches: Platja Gran near the medieval castle, La Mar Menuda and El Codolar located behind the walls.
Trade in Tossa de Mar is a fastly developing sector. Trade here plays an important part in its economical development. As most of the villages Tossa de Mar also has its weekly market, which is set up every Thursday, from 09.00 until 13.00 at the Rambla Pau Casals and the adjacent streets. In this market you will find vegetables, fruits and other food products, plants, clothes, shoes, souvenirs, articles for the house, etc.
